Progress, Not Perfection
I shared this photo on Facebook 12 years ago this month. I was beyond thrilled to start at my dream company. Many congratulated and celebrated with me.
Aside from my husband, no one knew that it took me 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘢 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳 to land the role.
I applied multiple times across several Google teams and business units. I was ignored by most. I got to various interview stages with 3 teams, and was rejected each time. And the role I was finally hired into, the decision process from first contact to offer took over 6 months.
Back then, I was proud of finally getting the dream job. Now, I am more proud that I didn’t give up. 𝘐 𝘥𝘪𝘥𝘯’𝘵 𝘭𝘦𝘵 𝘣𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘧𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘳𝘦𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘳 𝘧𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘱 𝘮𝘦 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘳𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨.
I wanted to share this, as when we see posts online, it’s easy to focus on the shiny outcomes from our peers. It’s easy for our minds to start doubting our own pace and capabilities. Sometimes we don’t even try because we are afraid to fail.
‘𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬, 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.’ was a timely reminder from my coach as we discussed my coaching practice progress in Q1. While we celebrate our friends’ and colleagues' success, let’s not let that distract us from celebrating our own progress forward, based on learnings along the way.
